Signage
Signage and supporting materials to help you comply with the new change in the law can be downloaded below.
If you sell tobacco products you are required by law to display a sign stating the legal age restriction for tobacco products. It is best practice to position the sign in a visible place, where it can be seen by anyone wishing to buy tobacco products, and follow the guidelines given below.
Signage for over the counter sales

NB: The sign must be printed at least A3 in size (420mm x 297mm). It is possible that your printer may automatically resize the images. Please ensure the printed format meets the criteria below.
If you choose to produce your own or use another, in order to comply with the law:
- It must state, ‘It is illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18’.
- It must be at least A3 in size (420mm x 297mm) and have letters at least 36mm high.
Signage for vending machine sales
All tobacco vending machines must also display a sign. These signs for vending machines have been produced by vending machine owners.
In order to comply with the law, the vending machine sign:
- Must state, ‘This machine is only for the use of people aged 18 or over’.
- Must be at least 60mm x 100mm, with letters at least 6mm high.
- Must be clearly visible to anyone using the machine.
Your tobacco wholesaler or vending machine provider should be able to provide you with a sign if they haven’t done so already.
Posters
Posters have been designed to raise awareness of the change in law and the date it comes into effect. These are aimed at teenagers so they are ideal for use within schools, colleges and youth clubs. They are available to download below.
